Sherlock Recs Post
I finally got my act together and started going through my Sherlock bookmarks; as a result this rec post was born, a compilation of the fics that I've read and really loved in this wonderful fandom. Phrases like delightful, beautiful, gorgeous, well-written and in-character get thrown round a lot, mostly because these are all one if not more of those things.
There's a fair mixture here: slash (John/Sherlock), het (multiple pairings) and some gen. There are AUs and crossovers, backstory fics, smut, ratings from G right through to NC-17. What can I say, I have eclectic tastes.
Recs are set out as such:
Title | Author (location)
{ Pairing | Rating | Warnings | Word Count }
Summary+notes
I have tried to provide thorough warnings throughout. However, it's entirely possible I may have missed things so if you see something that you think I should have warned for, please comment and let me know. Where there is no rating and/or summary on the original post/fill I have estimated and/or created one.
A Priori (Verse) (AU) | rubberbutton (AO3)
A Priori | White Noise | Symbiosis
{ John/Sherlock | PG-13 | Violence }
In which vampires have enslaved humans and control, well, everything. Vampire!Mycroft insists his little brother get a slave -- even though it didn't work out with the dog -- and Sherlock chooses the one guaranteed to irritate his brother the most: an unassuming little doctor with an ugly past and absolutely no style to speak of.
I love dystopias and I love vampire AUs and this series combines the two spectacularly. The world building is incredible--there's politics and rebellions and Mycroft--and the characterisation is a perfect balance between what we know and the changes that are wrought from existing in such a different world. Addictive.
A Slowly Dawning Attraction (5+1) |
{ John/Sherlock | PG-13-R | 12,143 }
5 times Sherlock and John nearly kissed at work, and 1 time they did.
The UST in this is delicious. Characterisation is flawless and adorable and it's nicely plotty for a simple concept.
The Anatomist (WIP) |
{ Molly/Sherlock (later parts, occasional/implied | R | Graphic violence, language, disturbing themes, some subtextual incest, gratuitous cadavers (special warnings for Part IV) }
You’re not the only one to enjoy a good murder. There’s others out there just like you – except you’re just a man. And they’re so much more than that." Jefferson Hope, A Study in Pink
Molly Hooper is actually Molly Moriarty. Jim is her twin. I don't think there are actually words for how bloody much I love this fic. The prose is stunning, the plot is in-depth and complete, the backstory is incredible. Molly becomes something entirely new but it all fits. Read it. Read it now.
Apotheosis |
{ John/Sherlock | R | Violence, gore, antisocial behavior, broad-spectrum mayhem | 16,556 }
John is given a chance to take the fight to Moriarty. You know what they say about whoever fights monsters...
A reversal of the Empty House scenario: namely that it's John who is presumed dead for three years. It's a journey, both literally and figuratively, and a fantastic example of subtlety. The plot and pace is fast but never messy, the characterisation of Moriarty is superb and the prose is gorgeous. Subtle all over, sometimes sparse, entirely fantastic.
Bad Timing (Crossover) |
{ Gen | R (language) | Mentions of suicide, language | 8361 }
It's election time and there's been a suicide at DoSAC. Malcolm calls in the police and the police call in Sherlock. Much swearing ensues.
Crossover with The Thick Of It. Possibly everything about this is perfect, idek. It has the humour of The Thick Of It down to an absolute tee and all of the characterisation for both series is flawless. Did I mention that there's Malcolm Tucker and Sherlock and Mycroft? Also, the swearing thing? Yeah, loads.
Barter System (meme) | Anon
{ John/Sherlock | R }
John wants to ask him why, why Sherlock’s decided that taking the shirt John slept in last night and wearing it around the flat was a good idea. If there’s some secret purpose that John’s not getting, or if it’s just because Sherlock wants to wear it.
Essentially, John and Sherlock develop a clothing barter system. IT IS AS GOOD AS IT SOUNDS. Sherlock in John's jumpers, John in Sherlock's coat, except not because that's "off limits." Wonderfully long and well-written, plotty and emotionally complex. So much more than you're expecting, and brilliant for it.
Between |
{ John/Molly (John/Sherlock and Molly/Sherlock implied) | R | ~800 }
Molly is like drowning himself in a warm bath: she's passive, tender, molding herself around him, not taking, not touching. A year ago this would have been exactly what he wanted; a year ago, he hadn't yet met Sherlock.
Gorgeous. This writer's prose is always beautifully shaped and this is no exception. Gets across a hundred emotions in a relatively short space and the last line is killer.
Breaking Sherlock |
{ John/Sherlock | NC-17 | Consensual painplay, dark themes | 1389 }
Sherlock discovers a way to turn off the noise in his brain.
and sequel: Aftercare of Your Reluctant Sadist { John/Sherlock | R | 1549 }
Consensual pain play. Not usually a kink that I'd read but this is gorgeous. A slow fall from grace that isn't, really.
It passes. The plot is simple but effective and slots nicely into canon.
Conversion (meme) |
{ John/Sherlock | PG }
“I spent six years at a boys’ prep school, then another five at boarding school, then three years at Cambridge,” Sherlock replied tersely. “It would be nothing short of miraculous if I didn’t know the rules of rugby."
A nice play on the fact that ACD!Watson played rugby. I know next to nothing about rugby, as much as I enjoy watching it, but the details were neither scant nor overwhelming. The prose is lovely and yes, okay, John playing rugby is an attractive image, okay?
darling, oh, just don't put down your guns yet |
{ John/Sherlock | R | Drug use }
It feels different, like Sherlock is slowly changing, disintegrating beneath John. Like Moriarty has crawled under Sherlock's skin and he's not letting go, and Sherlock simply doesn't know how to deal with it. Cigarettes, scented candles, morphine, Tchaikovsky - there's only one thing that can ever truly help Sherlock.
One of the earlier fics in this fandom, and the kind that's stunningly beautiful. sartorialists has an amazing gift for poetic prose and paints scenes with stunning visual and emotional imagery. Heartbreaking, properly so.
The Engagement (AU) |
{ John/Sherlock | NC-17 | ~9500 }
Gay!royalty!AU. For ~political reasons~, King Mycroft has his younger brother, Prince Sherlock, betrothed to a foreigner, Prince John. Sherlock is all, "How about nooooooooo" until he actually meets his husband-to-be.
Adorable. Hilarious. Sweet. Legit world building that is Actually Awesome. Plot! Murder! Smut! Misunderstandings! Royal marriages! What's not to like?
I don't know what to say about this, other than that it's truly beautiful, both in subject and style. Go and better your soul by reading it.
Feel Good Hit of the Summer | airspaniel (AO3)
{ Gen | PG-13 | Drug use | 1391 }
He isn't addicted. He would know it if he were. This is merely a... a protest against the monotony of existence.
Sherlock is still taking cocaine when he meets John. I have somewhat of a Sherlock/Drugs OTP and this is a beautiful story with a good grasp on Sherlock as a sociopathic narrator.
Five Drinks Sherlock Turned Down -- And One He Didn’t (meme) (AU) (5+1) | Anon
{ John/Sherlock | PG-13 }
John runs a bar. Sherlock is the newest customer.
I love any AU that even vaguely involves a bar or a club (I don't know what that tells you about me) and this one is lovely. Fun and funny, with every character and situation given a nice twist. John is a wonderful barman and Sherlock is a terrible customer.
Five Lives John and Sherlock Never Lived, and One They Wouldn't Trade (meme) (Crossovers/Fusions) | Anon
{ John/Sherlock | PG }
Five lives that John and Sherlock never lived, and one that they wouldn't trade for anything.
My prompt, so obviously I'm biased, but these five fills are gorgeous. Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Firefly, Stardust, Supernatural, so something for everyone (and obviously the author must have read my mind because I love all of those things). Five little glimpses into absolutely delightful crossovers, and a lovely +1 so round it off.
The Stardust section is especially wonderful--though the author admitted to starting and then abandoning a longer version, they posted what they'd written per a request here.
Five Times John Watson and Sherlock Holmes Almost Met, and the One Time They Actually Did (meme) |
{ John/Sherlock | PG }
He doesn’t notice him until the young man, who is wearing a rugby shirt with the number five on the back of it, swears a little too loudly for the hush of the library, snatching his attention away from the diagram of contusions consistent with blows by blunt objects. He does not see the man’s face, only his messy light-brown hair.
I adore what-might-have-been fics and this one is amazing, threading right through from childhood to the beginning of Sherlock and providing both great backstory and some wonderful not-quite meetings, all of which feel entirely possible. The prose has a lilting quality to it and the journey from children to adults is lovely.
Getting Better (WIP) (AU) |
{ John/Sherlock UST (later chapters) | PG-13 }
Tristram Holmes dreads attending his new primary school, fearing he'll be teased and bullied as usual. Only, nothing goes exactly as he thinks it will when he finds himself with a seemingly unlikely friend in Emily Watson.
Sherlock and John are both single fathers; told from a child's point-of-view. Kidfic is hard to pull off but this is fantastic; Tristram is a fully-fledged character in his own right, fleshed out and lovely, and Emily is hilarious. Sherlock as a father seems impossible to pull off but he is completely in character and believable, as are all of the other characters. There's plot but it's approached from a child's eye view with just enough hinted at for we, as the adult reader, to know what's going on even if the main characters don't. The interactions between the kids are delightful and the John/Sherlock UST is delicious.
The Giant Rat Of Sumatra, For Which The World Is Not Yet Prepared |
{ John/Sherlock | R | ~2500 }
Well, the abbreviated version is something like this - “I don’t think you should write about this one,” Sherlock said to John. “Whyever not,” said John, drolly, and winced at the memories. “My kids want to hear the story from the doctor himself,” said Lestrade, grinning. “They think he’s brave.”
Oh, delightful. Delightful to the extreme. She's always funny but this is a wonderful example of humour, humourous prose specifically, with a sweet edge to it that is honestly moving.
The Good Doctor (meme) | Anon
{ John/Sherlock | R }
Some innocent, fluffy touching between John and Sherlock that eventually evolves into slow, tender sex.
This really is sweet and tender. It's very subtle, understated, and lovely for it.
Helpless | ivyblossom (on DW)
{ John/Sherlock | R | Angst | 12,745 }
John, ever the good doctor, notices something not quite right about Sherlock. Biopsy, diagnosis, surgery, and radiation: Sherlock lives through thyroid cancer treatment.
From ivyblossom: "Think that's in poor taste? I actually kind of agree with you. This fic is written by a thyroid cancer survivor (me!) for a thyroid cancer survivor going through treatment round two." Which is kind of all you need to know. Delicate, thoughtful.
Homemaking | rageprufrock (AO3)
{ Gen | PG-13 | 4535 }
The original plan for returning to England involved fucking around being shellshocked and suffering mandatory post-combat counseling and physical therapy to dissect the shattered mosaic of his feelings. That's not quite how it goes.
Hilarious. Everyone is slightly happier than they are in the series and I believe it was written before it had finished broadcasting, but it's essentially a complete delight. There's also an amazing version of Clara, Sherlock and John spying on the neighbours and Mycroft.
How to Train Your Dragon (meme) (Crossover) | Anon
{ John, Sherlock | G }
There was a dragon following him. John tucked his hands into his pockets, hoping that it would go away. He’d had quite enough of dragons, really. Quite enough to fill a lifetime and then some.
Crossover with How To Train Your Dragon. You'd think that would be insanely hard to pull off but this fill does it with ease. NightFury!Sherlock is perfect and, somehow, in-character, despite not having one bit of dialogue, and John is put upon and secretly Okay with that.
I Am Become Death |
{ John, Sherlock | PG-13 | 1345 }
In which Sherlock does something very bad.
Short and terrifying. As in, I actually had a nightmare after reading this. This fact is made extra special because nothing outright terrifying actually happens--it's the subtle, the unspoken, the could-bes that made you want to cry. Extraordinary.
in your company i am tenderly drowsy |
{ Soo Lin/Andy | PG-13 }
There are stains on the carpet and half of her furniture is upturned, but she feels little about it beyond a profound sense of peace. The floors can be cleaned and her chattels righted whenever she wants to do it, because she is still here to do so.
Soo Lin isn't killed at the museum, but survives. Delicate and sensitive, giving Soo Lin the backstory she deserves.
it's not just twenty-twenty |
{ John & Sherlock (possible pre-slash) | PG | 780 }
Sherlock seeing John in his reading glasses and he basically melts because it's, you know. Hawt.
As someone who wear glasses, I fully approve.
Lab Book | sam_storyteller (on DW)
{ John/Sherlock | R }
"The likelihood of finding a cab on Christmas Eve is fast approaching nil." "So was the likelihood of you kissing me in the middle of the pavement, and yet."
Funny! Intelligent! John makes deductions! It's Christmas Eve! In a word: delightful.
Let You Kiss Me (So Sweet and So Soft) | out-there (on DW)
{ John/Sherlock | PG | 8702 }
The first time Sherlock kisses him, John keeps his eyes open, and so does Sherlock, and mostly, he wonders what Sherlock could possibly be up to. There'll be some logic to this. Some ridiculous experiment about body warmth or respiratory rates or testing a new way of picking pockets. Sherlock does the unimaginable for bizarre reasons, but behind it, there's always logic and curiosity. Sometimes, it just takes him a while to explain it to John.
This author always writes incredible, in-depth stuff and this is no exception. I wouldn't call it fluffy but it's undeniably sweet and very in-character, almost like a Sunday morning read. John's confusion is delightful.
The Letter of the Lore (meme) (AU) | Anon
{ Squint | PG }
Since Sherlock is so interesting in appearance, so odd and dark in temperament, so attuned to death... What if he had a fairy in his bloodline. Not a fairy like the Disney sort. No, the faeries of old legend. The ones that went bump in the night and made people afraid to go out after dark.
Excruciatingly well done. Although I love old Faerie legends I don't tend to read Faerie fics, but this is stupendous. Beautifully written, well-plotted and actually quite sweet. Subtle, nicely fused with canon, with Sherlock's cases--brilliant (besides, I think this picture proves that Sherlock must be at least a little bit fay. Look at him!).
Links |
{ John/Sherlock | PG | 1870 }
Sherlock wears this silver bracelet. It fits with... him... but there's this writing on it, and John can't quite get close enough to read it, and it's driving him nutty, especially because he's realising that Sherlock never actually takes it off.
Short and sweet with a clever resolution.
The Lobster Quadrille (meme) | Anon
{ John/Sherlock (AS LOBSTERS) | G }
In a universe not-too-distant from the one where the rather inconvenient need for oxygen is making the fingers of one body go slack against the other’s sodden clothes, there are lobsters. Lots and lots of lobsters, Everywhere. With knives.
THIS. IS. BRILLIANT. Apart from the incredible names--Lobsteriarty, Sherlobster, Lobstrade--and the feat of making lobsters in-character, this is actually really well written. And hilarious, did I mention that? Laugh-out-loud funny. A meme classic for a reason.
Lorem Ipsum (Series) (WIP) |
Surveilled | Problems & Solutions, Or... | Bohemian Like You | City Sirens, Violins | The Trick is to Keep Breathing | Grace to the Strong | Lorem Ipsum (plus Deleted Scenes)
{ John/Sarah/Sherlock | R-NC-17 throughout | Mentions of: bondage, medfet, blood/needleplay, voyeurism, drug addiction, peril, attempted non-con }
Sarah struggles with dating John, while Sherlock... is distracting. He watches them while they have sex. She catches him. OT3 ensues.
Whilst that's how it may have started, that summary is now far too simplistic to describe this wonderful, wonderful series. Everyone is in character, the dynamics of an OT3 are superbly managed and the plot that develops is both heartwrenching and completely engaging. It's believable, entirely so, and moreish. I read the first four in one go, deep into the night even though I had to get up the next morning, and I've reread the entire series more than once. Stupendous.
Man's Original Virtue (meme) (Fusion) | Anon
{ John/Sherlock | PG-13 }
The thing about Sherlock is that he doesn’t realise he’s giving orders half the time. It’ll be ‘get my phone, would you?’, or ‘hand me that scalpel’. He’s so caught up in his thought processes that he doesn’t notice that you’re not just an extension of his own limbs. It’s that, more than anything, that means John doesn’t fight the curse when Sherlock tells him what to do.
Fusion with Ella Enchanted. John was cursed as a baby so that whenever he's given a command, he has to follow the orders. The curse of Obedience. Well written, funny in places and so very, very moving in others. It's all of the characters, not just Sherlock, who are worked into the idea with finesse (Harry especially), and it's written in such a way that you don't need to have read the book to understand the concept.
Needing is One Thing (Getting is Another) |
{ John/Sherlock | Hard R | Language | ~18,000 }
In which there are near death experiences, escapes, capture, sex, and John in Sherlock’s coat, but not necessarily in that order.
Originally a comment fic. It flows beautifully between the two writers, switching easily between both point of view and style (each suited perfectly for what they're writing) and the plot is nicely detailed and complex, utilising all the characters. Moriarty in particular is great. Read this in one sitting, and I suggest you do the same.
The Necessity of Atheism (meme) | Anon
{ Gen | PG }
“It is not that we have any doubts about your intellectual ability,” the Sub-Rector is saying. Sherlock does not look at him directly. His eye is distracted by the light passing though the stained glass window behind his interrogators, projecting fragments of colour onto the table that lies between him and them.
Sherlock never finished University. Short but punchy, great characterisation--headcanon.
Nocturne (meme) (genderswap) | Anon
{ John/Sherlock (fem!Sherlock) | NC-17 }
John performing cunnilingus on fem!Sherlock.
Hot. Hot, hot, hot. And funny! And in-character. And actually emotionally complex.
Outclassed, Outplayed and Outnumbered (Crossover) |
{ John/Sherlock | PG-13 | Children, fluff, borderline crack }
Does anyone else think that if Sherlock and John had kids they'd be Jake, Ben and Karen? Yes, that Jake, Ben and Karen.
Crossover with Outnumbered. I may be biased because I am the prompt OP but seriously. Seriously. I prompted this because the idea stuck but never expected a fill, and then I was gifted with the most marvellous, well-written, in-character, hilarious and touching fic I could possibly have asked for.
It's a perfect mix of both canons, incorporating both themes, scenes and dialogue from Outnumbered with original material, and it adds up to everything about those children that made me prompt it in the first place. It demonstrates exactly why they could be John and Sherlock's offspring but does it whilst keeping them entirely in-character. Not one moment is twisted or characteristic sacrified, which I guess proves that they're the perfect children for these two? Mostly because they are far from perfect. It's funny, so much so, and it's not just the dialogue; the prose is hilarious in a droll, delightful way, very subtle and controlled, and had me literally laughing out loud. Even if you haven't seen Outnumbered I propose that you get on Youtube now and remedy that, then head straight back over to read the fic. Worth every second you spend on it. I adore it.
The Paradox Series (Series) (WIP?) |
An Act of Charity | The Paradox Suite | The Death and Resurrection of the English Language | Entirely Covered in Your Invisible Name | Wider Than a Mile | New Days to Throw Your Chains Away | A Thousand Threads of What-Might-Have-Beens
{ John/Sherlock | NC-17 throughout | Language, dark themes, possessiveness, possible emotional abuse, torture }
Being with Sherlock is a series of shocks, but John is game for it anyhow (from The Paradox Suite summary).
This series is almost indescribable. I started reading it, then stopped because I wasn't sure if I liked it; then, when I had actually mentally prepared myself, I went back and read what was (at that time) the entire series in one go.
This is the sociopathic!Sherlock fic, with characterisation made doubly impressive from the fact that the majority is from Sherlock's point of view. His thought processes are incredibly, fantastically drawn, every single good and not-good moment, and entirely inventive--look out for Radiohead lyrics and a certain List. Sherlock is almost bizarre, a little alien, and his relationship with John is terrifically messed up, giving you conflicting loyalties. Sherlock is at times an unsympathetic narrator, but like John you just keep on going and keep on loving. One of those fics that you really do have to read.
"Portuguese Irregular Verbs" (meme) (AU) |
{ Gen | G }
"Ah," said Sherlock, who was now drawing [+-FISH] in large letters all over the journal. "Has my proposal been cleared, then?"
John, Sherlock and linguistics. FABULOUS.
Precipitation |
{ John/Sherlock | PG }
Sherlock sits huddled in blankets, staring at the screen fixedly while the hyenas rip an antelope in half. "This reminds me of something," he says. "Something we've watched before." He snaps his fingers. "Ah. I remember. X Factor."
Pure fluff, but the in-character, slightly ironic kind. Pure love.
Rate of Change |
{ John/Sherlock | PG | 2575 }
In which there are broken violins, horology, and some mention of ancient code-breaking. Also, far too much philosophizing, and a second person narrator.
At night you listen to the Cold War ciphertexts that sometimes still sigh out over the radio waves, and in your mind you run the combinations. The result's not the point. It's all a game. You are lulled by the knowledge that there is a solution. It's out there, precise and Platonic. It has a physical shape. Oh, god. This prose. This prose. It's like someone distilled beauty down into words and this was the result.
The Republic of Heaven (WIP) (Crossover) |
{ John/Sherlock | PG-13 }
Born to a witch and a human, people know Sherlock will be unusual from the start. John Watson, on the other hand, seems perfectly ordinary, except for his dæmon.
Crossover with His Dark Materials. The two worlds are blended perfectly, the plot is engaging and weaved deftly into canon, and the dæmons! Perfect choices and beautifully drawn, with personalities that manage to become their own even as they reflect their humans'.
Ridiculous (AU) |
{ John/Sherlock | PG | 5404 }
John is the best retrieval expert the British Army has, and so naturally it's him that's sent in when some man with little sense of self-preservation keeps getting himself taken hostage - again, and again, and again.
A fantastically constructed AU--John and Sherlock are in character and the almost-absurdity of the situation is entirely enchanting whilst remaining oddly serious. Good plot and great execution.
Shopping List - June |
{ John, Sherlock, "Sarah/Anthea" | NC-17 | ~1700 }
John secretly writes femslash. Sherlock finds it and gives it an impromptu beta.
Ahahaha, this is one of the funniest things I have ever read. Sherlock definitely wins the prize for the world's worst (best?) beta and this story contains the single most hilarious use of punctuation I've ever encountered. Definitely a contender to win all of the internets.
Small Games (meme) | Anon
{ Sherlock/Sally | NC-17 }
She likes leaving traces on his body; tiny red nail scratches in strategic places (hip, waist, shoulder) where his clothes fit tightest, so if she's lucky he'll think of her for days. She'll get under Sherlock Holmes's skin, even if it has to be literally.
Unlikely pairing, fantastic piece of writing. Insanely hot and all the better for the emotional layers wrapped around it. This is sex with emotionally complex motivations which is, I always find, the best kind.
Somatosensory Perception |
{ John/Sherlock | PG-15 }
It's an exercise in observation, one he can't do by himself.
Writing on skin is a huge thing for me, and this is gorgeous. Oddly suspenseful, a little sad. Just--read it.
Sonata Form |
{ Gen | PG-13 | Drug use | ~7000 }
Mycroft Holmes has always revolved his life around that of his little brother, whether he wishes to do so or not.
Genuinely one of my absolute favourite fics ever. I don't tend to read fic about Mycroft but this pulled me in. The description and evolution of their relationship is beautiful -- so in character, and Sherlock is taken from a character who feels and behaves very much like a child but is still Sherlock through to what we see in the show. Completely, completely stunning.
Smoke and Ashes |
{ Gen | PG-13 | Drug use, death of a child | ~1500 }
The only person who helped Lestrade find his little boy was a half-dead junkie in a condemned townhouse.
Oh, ouch. This is a stunning piece of work and a stunning backstory. The ending sends honest-to-god shivers down my spine every time.
The Staff of Baker Street High School (meme) (AU) | Anon
{ Gen (John/Sherlock implied) | PG-13 }
“Strategically unsound,” Mr Holmes informs the boys climbing out of the Latin room window. They freeze. “There’s a clear view of this window from the staff room and from the science department offices. Honestly, you’re just not trying.”
Glorious. Glorious. I wish these guys had been my teachers, it would have been amazing. Everyone is perfectly matched to their subjects--Sherlock is, of course, Chemistry--and the little details are just gorgeous. Every character is slotted into this world with ease and it nicely reflects canon whilst managing to build a little canon of its own.
Sting Like A Bee (meme) | Anon
{ John/Sherlock (implied) | PG-13 | Homophobia, which is in no way condoned and in fact roundly punished }
Sherlock and John go to a boxer's gym as part of an investigation. Sherlock starts out letting the guy get in a few sound shots, building the boxer's confidence and then proceeds to wipe the floor with him.
So I have a thing for boxer!Sherlock, for reasons unknown (I don't even watch it or know anything about it) and this doesn't disappoint. Enough detail to seem authentic but not to confuse, and Sherlock being so skilled is just sexy.
Synthetic (Fusion) |
{ John/Sherlock | PG-13 | ~2000 }
John is the best blade runner ever to have worked for the London police. Mycroft calls him out of seclusion to track down and retire one especially slippery replicant that used to be an invaluable asset to them in solving crimes, but over time began to believe that it was human.
Fusion with Blade Runner. The last time I saw that film I must have been about twelve and didn't have a clue what was going on, so believe me when I say that you do not have to have seen Blade Runner to read this story. Regardless of your knowledge of the film, read this. I was left speechless, my level of emotional response was just so strong. The prose is sparse with a technical feel that is somehow beautiful and the story is relatively short but powerful, very much so. Warning for angst, but only pass this up if you really, really can't cope, because it's worth it.
Those Sanguine Groundless Hopes |
{ John/Sherlock | PG-13 }
When John reaches his next blood donation date and realises he can't do it now he's had sex with Sherlock, it's devastating.
Short but, honestly, devastating. The way it hits John is the way it hits you as a reader, a real gut-punch.
Thermodynamics (Series) |
The Second Law of Thermodynamics | The Art of Negotiation | The Definition of Insanity | The Rules
{ John/Sherlock | PG-13-NC-17 (last installment) }
In which there's no heating and there's a dead owl in Sherlock's bed.
Every fandom needs a hypothermia!fic. Whilst this isn't quite hypothermia, more a case of broken heating in the middle of winter, it nonetheless does the job rather spectacularly. Bed sharing! Body heat! Unhealthy amounts of UST! I think this was probably the first "famous" series in this fandom and it deserves the title. Sweet, fun, in-character, well-written. Go. Now.
they tell me their secrets (will you tell me yours too) |
{ John/Sherlock | PG-13 | 2320 }
In Afghanistan, the supplies tell him when they're running low, and the cars always, always tell him when strangers have touched them, and John gets known as having a knack (paranoia, his men call it, but he's never missed a single car bomb) for keeping his men safe.
An unusual idea worked into canon with ease. Beautifully written and structured.
Things I Never Told You (meme) | multiple fillers
{ John/Sherlock, Lestrade, Mrs Hudson, Harry | PG-13 }
On John's laptop in a sub-folder tucked away in another sub-folder in amongst his few music files is a hidden folder full of text documents, updated constantly. It's labeled "Things I Never Told You", and there's a text file in there for nearly everyone John knows.
A wonderful example of the collaborative nature of the meme. Every fill is sensational and John's voice is constant despite the varying writers. Read each and every one.
This Caring Lark (meme) (Crossover) |
{ John/Sherlock (implied), John/Ross | PG-13 }
When John was shipped over to Afghanistan, he was seconded to UNIT.
Crossover with Doctor Who. This is a lovely merging of the canons and a beautiful story, wonderfully structured with hints and homages to each series.

John Watson has three siblings, not just one--famine, pestilence and war. John? Well, he's Death, of course.
John, Harry, Anthea and Moran are the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Amusing and fun, with some nice references to other literary works.
Traffic Lights for the Colour Blind |
{ John/Sherlock | PG-13 | Suicidal themes, mentions of brainwashing | ~9400 }
In which it's not the war John is missing, Sherlock needs to find new ways to hang on to his flatmate, and Moriarty tries to get himself a pet of his own. Features also: guns, tea, the reason Sherlock Holmes won't take the tube, cell phones, a budgie, and one obnoxious older brother.
This author never disappoints, but this is gorgeous. Structured in an inventive way--red, amber, green--with prose that hints rather than telling you things outright. Some pretty heavy subjects but that's not unusual territory for this author. Sombre but dashed with hope.
The Undiscovered Molly |
{ Sherlock/Molly | NC-17 | ~2700 }
With Molly's assistance, Sherlock applies the scientific method to sex. He fails spectacularly at objective observation.
Firstly, hot. Secondly, in-character. Combined, the two produce this piece of utter brilliance. It's believable, importantly--Sherlock's inner monologue rings so true--and they play off against each other so well. Also, did I mention that it's hot?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Short and fabulous.

{ Joanna/Sherlock (fem!John), Sylvia Moran/Jim Moriarty | R | Mentions of BDSM and dub/non-con }
Sherlock realises that he is in love with girl!John and has a bit of a meltdown over it, He decides that research and observation of romantic rleationships is called for, lest the love of his life leave him. Girl!John, when she finds out, is moved, amused and confused all at the same time.
This is fantastically written, firstly. Secondly, Joanna is wonderful, a great female variant of the John we love, and Sherlock's insecurity works; he's entirely in-character. There's some wonderfully angsty plot and a brilliant compare-and-contrast structure between Joanna/Sherlock and Sylvia/Jim, and overall it is amazing. Go and read it.

{ John/Sherlock (John/Sherlock/Mycroft), Moriarty/Moran | PG-13 }
John is oxygen. Sherlock is hydrogen. Together they make water. Moriarty is sodium.
Ahahahaha. I love this fandom so much. Everyone is just so good. Scientifically accurate, hilarious and...sexy? Somehow, YES.

A child gets dumped on the doorstep that is so unmistakably Sherlock's (Those eyes! That hair! Those curls are practically feral.) that it's an undeniable truth. Sherlock defies everyone's expectations by being a bloody fantastic father, in his own way.
Short but gorgeous. I'm slightly biased because this was my prompt but the fill is tender, touching and makes you think. It's what's hinted at that really gets you, and the last few lines...love. Love.

Sherlock/John/Sarah sandwich with John as the filling if you know what I mean.
Yes, this is PWP, and it's also brilliant. Hot, sexy, great dialogue. Never enough OT3.

BAMF John shows up the Scotland Yarders with his crack shot.
That, essentially. John is an amazing shot (and it's sexy, okay? Very).

Sherlock had an identical twin brother who used to upset Mummy very often, hence the line "It wasn't me that upset her."
Surprisingly sad. Really, very sad. This combines a child's view of the world with some heavy subjects, hinting at them just enough in childish prose for us, as readers, to understand what's going on. It links nicely to issues in the canon, namely Mycroft and Sherlock's relationship, and has become very much a headcanon piece for me.

I just want to see fic where John walks in on - or overhears - Sherlock and some girl having absolutely fantastic sex.
This. Short, hot. I seem to have a thing for Sherlock being good with the ladies.

Sherlock dies. No Reichenbach Falls. How does everyone cope?
Fairly short but...wow. A sparse piece, a lot in what people don't say rather than what they do, and a stark depiction of grief. It feels almost quiet, and it's an aching kind of sadness.

{ John/Sherlock | PG-13 }
Sherlock knows that John's too good for him and John will leave. One day, John does.
Oh, man. Don't read this unless you want to be broken, because it hurts so good. Fantastic structure and prose, perfect characterisation. Painful, brilliant.
When The Bough Breaks |
{ Gen | PG }
Sherlock finds himself playing unwilling babysitter to a blond, blue-eyed baby who bears a striking resemblance to a certain doctor...
Pure crack. Based on drawings bysadynax which are featured throughout, John is turned into a baby and Sherlock has to look after him. Hilarious, in-character and adorable.
The Whore of Babylon Was A Perfectly Nice Girl | out-there (on DW)

Sherlock walks into a room and takes all the space right out of it. He does the same inside John's head.
Who hasn't read this? And if you haven't, why haven't you? Go, read, now! Distilled down to its basic parts, the premise of the story is that John thinks Sherlock has no sexual experience, when in fact the opposite (no, really, the opposite) is true. Probably the best sexual!Sherlock fic out there, and deliciously long. I read it in one sitting and it was so. worth. it.
Your Moral Crisis Is Stupid |

Sherlock is asexual. John is not. Possibly, Sherlock should have told him this before they had sex.
Although I see BBC!Sherlock as asexual I don't tend to read asexual fics, but this is just gorgeous. It's a story about people trying to work through differences because they love each other, about the fallout and the aborted solutions and the struggle. Real, human. Brilliant.

As John gets in the car, he carefully does not look at Sherlock's hands, and realizes that he might have a problem.
Hand kink. Majorly. Also light gun kink and possibly also some licking and basically ALL THE THINGS, okay? All the kinks. Insanely hot and relevant to my interests. And hopefully yours.

Ah, yes please. I have been anxiously awaiting the words 'hand', 'gun', 'licking', and 'kink' in one of your reactions and finally, the last one gives the light. ;)
